INSTRUCTOR: Maggie Braun
COURSE OVERVIEW:
In 7th
Grade Humanities, students study the history of Texas from early times to the
present. Students examine the full scope of Texas history, including Natural
Texas and its People; Age of Contact; Spanish Colonial; Mexican National;
Revolution and Republic; Early Statehood; Texas in the Civil War and
Reconstruction; Cotton, Cattle, and Railroads; Age of Oil; Texas in the Great
Depression and World War II; Civil Rights and Conservatism; and Contemporary
Texas eras. The focus in each era is on key individuals, events, and issues and
their impact.
LEARNING RESOURCES:
This
year, scholars will use a variety of resources to learn about Texas history. Our
main focus will center on our scholar-produced Interactive Notebook. An
Interactive Notebook is a composition book where scholars will write notes,
produce charts, diagrams, and manipulatives, and finally, create writing
reflections. The Interactive Notebook is vital to scholar success. From this Interactive Notebook all classwork
will be graded. It will also provide all
the information for formative and summative assessments.

Summative assessments:
A summative assessment measures a
scholar’s level of mastery of the knowledge and skills acquired over a given
unit.
In each
unit of study, we will be working towards a large goal. In order to demonstrate understanding of the
unit’s objectives, scholars will complete a summative assessment of some kind
at the end of each unit. Examples of the different approaches scholars will be
assessed are through unit test, projects, and labs. Summative assessments can vary based upon
what is felt to be the most appropriate way to measure content learned in any
given unit.
Formative assessments:
A formative assessment is a frequent measure of a scholar’s progress
throughout a unit in order to identify what adjustments to teaching need to be
made to ensure every scholar reaches a mastery level of the knowledge and
skills being acquired.
In order to
ensure that true learning is taking place with every scholar, formative
assessments will be performed often and in many diverse ways. Examples of the
different approaches to formative assessment of scholars are quizzes, exit
tickets, Do Now’s, and Check For Understanding (CFUs). Formative assessments
can vary based upon what is felt to be the most appropriate way to measure
content being learned in any given lesson.
RE-TEST POLICY:
If a
scholar earns a score of 69% or lower on a test they are eligible for a retake.
However, the scholar may not earn a grade higher than a 70%. The score earned on
the retake test must be the recorded grade, not the average or higher of the
two grades. Tests may be retaken only once. Unless the teacher offers a retake
for an entire class, it is the scholar’s responsibility to see his/her teacher
within one week of receiving the failing test grade to retake the test.
Scholars
must complete at least one session of tutoring before they can re-test.
HOMEWORK, LATE WORK, AND ABSENT
WORK:
Scholars
who have missed work due to an excused
absence have as many class days to make up the work as they were absent. If a
scholar has missed several days due to illness, please contact me to determine
a reasonable plan to help catch up on missed work.
